I got an e-mail from The Morocco Board today decrying the fact that the US Consulate has been closed since April.  Here is an excerpt:

Following two suicidal bombing in Casablanca where two hapless terrorists killed themselves using homemade explosives, The US State Department closed its consulate in Casablanca and directed everyone to go to …neighboring countries for business with the consulate.

This is an interesting and rather contemptuous manner to treat a long time US ally such as Morocco. It is has been perceived by Moroccans & Moroccan Americans as a slap in the face, a peculiar way to show support for Morocco in its fight against terrorism.

I absolutely agree.  Unfortunately, my husband, a future Moroccan-American is one of the people affected by this - you see, his interview is scheduled for next week.  As it looks as though the Consulate isn’t going to be open by then, we have no choice but to wait or try to schedule an appointment elsewhere, which isn’t really possible without getting a visa to another country, and that’s just a hassle in and of itself.

The Morocco Board suggests sending an e-mail to nivcasablanca@state.gov to urge them to reopen the consulate as soon as possible.

  1. Cat in Rabat Says:

Crappy timing! Don’t give up on France - find a way to get your visa!

  2. lady macleod Says:

I shall do so immediately then. I think they should have re-opened the next day! What sort of message does this send? I’ve had a “warning” from the State Department such that if I were not here myself I would be terrified.

  3. Nicole Says:

I understand how you must feel. I have plenty of friends who are in the same situation as you. My husband came to the U.S. back in January on a fiance visa. We are waiting for the Adjustment of Status to be completed. I thank God everyday for having him here.

I know that it’s very difficult for us to understand why the Consulate would want to stay closed for this long. The only thing I can think of is that maybe they have more information then the public is aware of. I do not believe the Consulate wishes to prolong all the interviews. After all, the Consulate is going to have to deal with the headache of rescheduling everyone. However, it does seem a bit extreme to remain closed for this long. I will keep you and your hubby in my prayers as well as everyone else waiting for their interviews.

Hang in there :) I know easier said then done.

  4. Liosliath Says:

I’m really sorry, that sucks. I remember my own days of emailing nivcasablanca, and the idiotic responses I’d get back…but I’ll give it a try. Suppose it can’t hurt!

Did you already start the process for the Schengen visa?

  5. Barbara Says:

Uhrg, that really sucks. I hope they reopen soon, incredible that they remain closed. What a joke for a Moroccan to have to go to a consultate in a neighbouring country.

    Good luck!!!

  6. taamarbuuta Says:

Thank you all for your kind words. I sent them a somewhat nasty e-mail (maybe they’ll deport me back to the US?) asking for information.

We didn’t start the Schengen process, but shouldn’t be hard - he’s had a Schengen visa before :)

  7. oumama Says:

Good luck Jill, i really hope it will reopen soon “daria daria”!!!
For the shengen visa it’s in the bag!!
stay full of hope, world citizen.

  8. Siwana Says:

neighboring countries ??? who is behind this crazy suggestion as an alternative??

  9. Aimee Says:

My fiance has a friend that just went to Casa and thought the U.S. Embassy was open. And, he saw people going in/out. I’ll send an e-mail b/c I’m gonna need them to reopen too.

  10. taamarbuuta Says:

Yeah, that’s what makes me nuts. They’re there, they’re just not open to the public.

  11. CSC Says:

we are praying the consulate will reopen very soon because we have waited for over a year now and our process was completed all that was needed was a scheduled medical examination and interview appointment. It’s very frustrating!! we have been patiently waiting but how much longer must we continue to wait for the consulate to reopen??? It seems unfair to us and other applicants because of the recent events that is punishing all the applicants. Morever, we respect all the security measures that are being taken to protect human lives. However, these measures should be in place by now and the consulate should resume normal business procedures so that we can begin our lives together in America which guarantees us that privelege in the persuit of happiness, safety and freedom…and applicants visas should be expedited because of these delays. Warm Regards

  12. Laura Calhoun Says:

I want to see what my fiance has to do to get a visa so he can come over here and we can get married here.

  13. jalil Says:

    dear ambassador;
please order to reopen the consulate ; this is the demand of all moroccan waiting to continue their way to america .

    regards.

  14. annie Says:

    yes
my husband has had his interview in april.he was told to bring back some doucuments as of today which is may 29 he still has not been able to get back in there to do this . why is it taking sooo long for this? why r they not open ? they have had plenty of time for all these measures and should have already been open . may 10 was our anniversery. it has been a year for us everything has been approved and just waiting to get his visa so he can come and be with his wife. whyyyyyy?????

  15. A CITIZEN Says:

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY AMERICA! GOD BLESS YOU AND BLESS ALL PEACEMAKERS ALL AROUND THE WORLD. PLEASE I WANT TO CELEBRATE MY COUNTRY HOLIDAYS IN MY HOME AMERICA.IT HAS BEEN OVER A YEAR NOW I DIDNT EAT HUMBURGERS AND MCDONALDS AND I NEVER WENT TO A CHURCH DURING THIS LONG PERIOD.I AM REALLY MISSING MY HOME. I WANT TO GO HOME WHERE I CAN FEEL THE SUN OF THE LAND OF FREEDOM. MY PATIENCE ALMOST RANS OUT. WHY WE ARE PAYING THE TAXES AND WHERE IS OUR SAFETY OVERSEAS WHILE TERROR THINGS HAPPEN LIKE WHAT HAPPENED IN CASABLANSA? EVACUATE ALL THE AMERICANS OR REOPEN THE CONSULATE. THE AMERICANS ALL AS ONE SOUL AND ONE HEART AREN’T WE? I HAVE BEEN WAITING PATIENTLY OVER A YEAR NOW FOR MY HUSBAND’S VISA AND THE LAST THING WE NEEDED IS CLOSING THE CONSULATE TEMPORARILY TO THE PUBLIC!! IT REALLY SEEMS UNFAIR BECAUSE OUR COUNTRY IS GREAT OF WHAT AND HOW IT STANDS FOR BUT WHY DIDN’T THEY FORWARD PEOPLE TO SOMEWHERE ELSE WHERE ALL THE APPLICANTS AND CITIZENS COULD REACH THEIR SERVICES FROM THE AMBASSY OR A CLOSER SAFE PLACE SUCH SABTA OR MELILLA AND GIVE AUTHORIZATION TO ALL APPLICANTS TO GET IN THESE CITIES AND CONTINUE THEIR VISAS PROCEDURES WHILE THE CONSULATE IS STILL CLOSED?

  16. annie Says:

    hey
i agree with thhis person here.why must everyone suffer for this? we have husbnads and family waiting to come here. the process of the immigration is bad enough now they r making everyone suffer more on top of it by closing the embassay and making people wonder when or if thier loved ones r ever going to make it here! why r they doing this and why must they travel to another country when what they have to do is right in thier back yard.? maybe as a group we can go and demand that they open thier dorrs and get the process done and bring our loved ones home with us.it is unfair to all the ones who have gone through all the process of this and right down to the very last thing that they have to do and that is get thier visa at least that is what my husband has left to do.open ur doors and let our familys do what they have to do to get on with the process of living!
    thank you

  17. A US CITIZEN Says:

did your husband go to the consulate with the documents requested by the consulate on May 29th?
we are very intersted in forming a group to present our cases and complaints to the Consulate General and i think to be the best to have a list of people who want to participate in this issue for signing a petition so we can forward it to the Consulate and get their immediate intention!! my husband and i made up a list for anyone who is concerned in starting a petition. Feel free to contact us through our email spiritchild128@yahoo.com.
    Warm Regards,

  20. A US CITIZEN Says:

    Dear Annie,
We can relate to your request we sent to you a petition for you to sign to get the consulate to reopen within the next few weeks please feel free to sign the petition in addition you may send an inquiry to the consulate through this email address the consulate provided : ACSCasablanca@state.gov
If you need any further information please let us know.
    Warm Regards,

This is the last warden message we received from the consulate.

WARDEN MESSAGE - PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA

This Public Announcement is being updated to alert Americans to
ongoing security concerns in the Middle East and North Africa,
    including
ongoing violence in Iraq. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a
    high
level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their
security awareness. This Public Announcement supersedes the Public
Announcement issued on November 20, 2006 and expires on November 20,
    2007.

Credible information indicates terrorist groups seek to continue
attacks against U.S. interests in the Middle East and North Africa.
Terrorist actions may include bombings, hijackings, hostage taking,
kidnappings, and assassinations. While conventional weapons such as
explosive devices are a more immediate threat in many areas, use of
non-conventional weapons, including chemical or biological agents, must
be considered a possible threat. Terrorists do not distinguish between
official and civilian targets. Increased security at official U.S.
facilities has led terrorists and their sympathizers to seek softer
targets such as public transportation, residential areas, and public
areas where people congregate, including restaurants, hotels, clubs,
    and
shopping areas. The September 2006 attack by assailants used
    improvised
explosives, gunfire, and vehicles laden with explosives on the U.S.
Embassy in Syria. A bombing targeting a bus transporting foreign
workers of a U.S. company in Algeria took place in December 2006.
    There
was a series of bombings in Morocco in March and April 2007, two of
which occurred simultaneously outside the U.S. Consulate General and
    the
private American Language Center in Casablanca. Additionally, an
    attack
took place on the American International School in Gaza in April 2007.
These events underscore the intent of terrorist entities to target
facilities perceived to cater to Westerners. Potential targets are not
limited to those companies or establishments with overt U.S. ties. For
instance, terrorists may target movie theaters, liquor stores, bars,
casinos, or any similar type establishment, regardless of whether they
are owned and operated by host country nationals. Due to varying
degrees of security at all such locations, Americans should be
particularly vigilant when visiting these establishments.

The violence in Iraq and the clashes between Palestinians and
Israelis have the potential to produce demonstrations and unrest
throughout the region. In addition, the Department of State continues
to warn of the possibility for violent actions against U.S. citizens
    and
interests in the region. Anti-American violence could include possible
terrorist actions against aviation, ground transportation, and maritime
interests, specifically in the Middle East, including the Red Sea,
Persian Gulf, the Arabian Peninsula, and North Africa.

The Department is concerned that extremists may be planning to
carry out attacks against Westerners and oil workers on the Arabian
Peninsula. Armed attacks targeting foreign nationals in Saudi Arabia
that resulted in many deaths and injuries, including U.S.citizens,
appear to have been preceded by extensive surveillance. Tourist
destinations in Egypt that are frequented by Westerners recently have
been attacked resulting in many deaths and injuries, including
Americans. Extremists may be surveilling Westerners, particularly at
hotels, housing areas, and rental car facilities. Potential targets
    may
include U.S. contractors, particularly those related to military
interests. Financial or economic venues of value also could be
considered as possible targets; the failed attack on the Abqaiq oil
processing facility in Saudi Arabia in late February 2006 and the
September 2006 attack on oil facilities in Yemen are examples.

Americans considering seaborne travel near the Horn of Africa or
    in
the southern Red Sea should exercise extreme caution, as there have
    been
several incidents of armed attacks and robberies at sea by pirates in
the last year. Military action by U.S. and allied navies in several
subsequent incidents resulted in the capture or death of pirates
threatening international commerce. No U.S. citizens have been hurt in
these attacks. When transiting around the Horn of Africa or in the Red
Sea near Yemen, it is strongly recommended that vessels travel in
convoys, and maintain good communications contact at all times. For
more information on piracy off the Horn of Africa, please see the East
    Africa Public Announcement at
    http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1158.html.

On occasion, the travel of official personnel at embassies and
consulates is restricted because of security concerns, and these posts
may recommend that private U.S. citizens avoid the same areas if at all
possible. Services to U.S. citizens in countries abroad may be
    affected
if employees’ movements are restricted. If this happens, U.S.
    embassies
and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to
U.S. citizens. In case office hours are reduced, U.S. citizens in need
of emergency assistance should telephone the nearest U.S. Embassy or
    Consulate before visiting in person.

The U.S. Department of State encourages all American citizens
residing in Morocco to register their presence and obtain up-to-date
information on security conditions at the U.S. Consulate General in
Casablanca at 8 Blvd. Moulay Youssef, Telephone: 022-43-05-78. After
hours, please call 022-26-45-50 or 061-17-23-67. Information is also
    available on our website at:
    http://casablanca.usconsulate.gov/warden_information.html

In addition, U.S. citizens planning to travel to the Middle East
    or
North Africa should consult the Department of State’s country-specific
Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, Consular Information Sheets, the
Worldwide Caution Public Announcement and other information, available
on the Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.
Up-to-date information on security conditions can also be obtained by
calling 1-888-407-4747 in the U.S. and Canada and, for callers outside
the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

I am writing concerning the temporary closure of the Consulate in Casablanca, Morocco. My wife and I have been waiting since January 2007 and continue to patiently wait for the Consulate to reopen so she can obtain her visa to be with me in America. As a military member, I understand that tighter security measures must be looked into at the Consulate. We are just wondering when the Consulate will reopen so my wife (and other foreigners) will be able to conduct their business again. The separation between us is difficult, but something we have to deal with.

Having the separation between my wife and I is very excrutiating. If you can, please advise us approximately when the Consulate will be open for business again. Thank you.

  25. taamarbuuta Says:

@ DuWayne: I wish I knew when the Consulate were going to reopen as well. I’ve got your e-mail, so I’ll pass along anything I hear about. Please sign the petition as well, as it affects you. I believe the plan is to send the petition to the Consul and the Ambassador when there are sufficient signatures.

  26. Joan Says:

Please keep me informed of any news also… My husband and I are also waiting for the Consulate to reopen so that he can have his interview. The separation is very hard on both of us.

    Regards, Joan and Mohamed

  27. DuWayne Says:

Yes, I already signed the petition. I heard a rumor from my wife who read the local newspaper in Agadir, Morocco. I also confirmed this with a Naval Attache’ in Rabat. There is a meeting this weekend with the Embassy and the government of Casablanca. If everyone can agree on the new security measures, the Consulate should open next week.

I emailed my State Representative and Senator. Both have responded that they are looking into the issue. I constantly bombard them with phone call so they don’t forget me and continually work on this. I also had my mother contact her State representatives. I suggest eveyone else do the same and have their relatives do the same. The more publicity, the more pressure we give the State Department.

Let’s hope that this weekend has a good outcome.

  28. A US CITIZEN Says:

    Hi everybody!
After receiving 38 signatures we are intending to send the petition tomorrow to The US Consulate General and the Ambassador. So please don’t give up to demand urging the Consulate to reopen very soon so that people can have a normal life with their families and the consulate starts the resume normal business hours for US citizens and their relatives services.
    Regards,

I’m a morrocan citizen living in Spain. my problem is that i need a visa to visit my girl friend in USA.But, the autority american in Spain doesn’t want me to look for visa here in Spain and they told me to look for it in my country native(morocco).the american consulate in Casablanca doesn’t receive people to obtain visas. What can i do to visit my girlfriend/wife.

  30. taamarbuuta Says:

@ Assou - When did the Spanish consulate tell you that? The Consulate’s website (http://casablanca.usconsulate.gov/press_release.html) encourages those who need nonimmigrant visas to visit other embassies (including the one in Madrid) for their visa. Print out that page and take it to the American consulate in Spain when you go.

  31. A US CITIZEN Says:

    Hi,
@ REPLY FOR Assou::: Also if you couldn’t get through the website page here is what taamarbuuta is telling you to do you can print it out and take it to the US consulate in Madrid :
