Livejournal (might be) unblocked in Morocco!

Filed under: Breaking News — taamarbuuta @ 4:24 pm

Livejournal, one of the early popular blogging/journaling sites, has returned to Morocco! I discovered this by accident today when reading through old entries over at Cat in Rabat’s blog and clicked on the blog link of someone who had left a comment, and - VOILA!

From what I understand, Livejournal was blocked on and off during 2005, then blocked permanently in Feb/March of 2006, only to return, well, very recently.

Live Journal is still directly unreachable for most ADSL subscribers in Morocco. I test access every day to a number of blocked sites (LJ among them). Live Journal, like Multiproxy or Anonymizer, has never been directly reachable in Tangier and other cities, not once since it has permanently blocked.

Some users in Rabat and Marrakech reported the accessibility of LJ and even Google Earth, usually temporarily.

A website or a service being accessible, from time to time and for a few subscribers only in certain cities, does not mean that its censorship has been lifted “in Morocco”. Please don’t rush to conclusions without thorough verification.

    I *still* can’t access it. sigh ………….

    My apologies Mohammed.

I must say though, that I too check Livejournal automatically every single day and this is the first time since I got internet at home a year ago that it has worked in Meknes. So far, I’ve been able to access it for four hours, so we’ll soon see if it’s truly lifted or not.

I canasure you that LJ is still blocked. I have tried to get access to it several times over the last three weeks and it is not working. I tried Maroqtelekom so far, because that’s what they have in the few public hotspots and here at university as well.

I don’t know of getting another internet provider might help.
